Pepa is salty, regrets dumping Will Smith ‘cause “he wasn’t thug enough”

Everybody knows nice guys finish last.  Except when they finish first, become near-billionaire Grammy-winning Oscar-nominated movie stars, and win the game of life– including the level where you have to star in a movie with Eva Mendes, sleep with her, and convince your wife to be down with it.  Will Smith is indeed that dude.

But back in the day, before he met Jada, he was just a nice guy with a record deal trying to holla at a girl above his pay grade– in this case, Pepa of the one-time hip-hop super group Salt-N-Pepa.  Everything was going great until Pepa decided to keep it real, which I’ve heard sometimes goes wrong.  She dumped little Willie from Philly for bonafide thug rapper Treach from the group Naughty by Nature.  In an interview released yesterday, Pepa– real name Sandra Denton– talked about why she decided to pass on a life of unlimited everything for a life of domestic violence, custody battles, and a spot next to Jose Canseco and Omarosa on The Surreal Life:

“I thought Will was really cute and we would hang out a lot on the road. He liked to take care of me and never let me spend a dime. He was that kind of guy, real generous.

I remember when they won their first award, he asked me to go out with him afterward. He was so excited. We were walking along the street getting ready to grab something to eat, and he just gave this homeless guy $100 dollars.

I sometimes kick myself when I think about what could have been. He was so nice to me, but I really wasn’t feeling him. I guess I couldn’t appreciate a nice guy like Will Smith.

He wasn’t thug enough. I was attracted to thugs and hoodlums. Will was too nice to me.

I liked people like Louis Burrell (MC Hammer’s brother). He was rough, he was street and he didn’t pull any punches. He would walk around with a cane and pimp hat. He always referred to women as b**ches. Even with all that, I liked him.”

Just so we’re clear, taking care of a woman, being generous, being nice, giving to homeless people, being Will Smith… bad.  Cane, pimp hat, calling women bitches, being MC Hammer… ‘s brother… good.  Gotcha.

Two lessons here, ladies.  One, when you go after thugs, don’t be surprised when you wake up one day married to a guy who turned out to be a thug.  Two, nice guys are better.  Don’t overthink it.

Dah well!

"Dah well!"
