Precious – Must-See Movie of the Fall

This is probably one of the most powerful trailers I’ve seen in a long time.

Apparently, Precious won a gang of awards at Sundance in January and the buzz is that Mo’Nique will get an Oscar nomination. (Interestingly, though the film has gotten stellar reviews, there is little discussion of the film itself getting an Oscar nomination. Don’t get your hopes up too high, darkies.)

Mo’Nique’s skills are apparently a “surprise” even though everyone knows that comedians tend to be better overall actors than actors that are purely dramatic. You can teach dramatic acting, but you can’t really teach someone to be funny. You either are or you aren’t.

That said, after Bill Murray, Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx, Marlon Wayons, and Eddie Murphy, you would think Hollywood would stop being “surprised” when comedians give great dramatic performances.
