American Idol jumps the shark…Ellen DeGeneres is new host
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
You have got to be kidding me. Ellen has announced from her twitter page that she will be joining the American Idol cast as the 4th judge replacing prescription drug filled, brain addled, former Arsenio Hall cartoon cat dancing host, Paula Abdul. Sure, Paula spent most of every season appearing to be drugged out. Sure, she gave every American Idol contestant more praise than their own mother’s would have given them. Sure, she did stuff like this on television…
But, all of that aside, you know what else she did? Knew at least a little about music. Sure, we all know that Ellen can dance, but does she know anything about singing? or singing competitions? Let me answer that for you…NO. Yet, Fox still thinks this is the right idea. Via People,
“DeGeneres will sit alongside Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi and offer her own unique perspective to the contestants throughout the competition,” Fox television says in a statement.
DeGeneres, 51, begins her stint after the audition rounds, which have featured a rotating group of celebrity guest judges including Shania Twain, Victoria Beckham, Mary J. Blige, Joe Jonas and Kristin Chenoweth.
You are jumping the shark Mr. Cowell. Sure, A.I. is starting to see a slip in ratings, but it is still killing in comparison to anything else thrown against it in its time slot. Why are you reading that old Happy Days script and deciding to throw all credibility out the window?
Do all parties involved believe that strongly that the show can’t be successful without a big name judge…who may or MAY NOT know anything about music? How stupid does Fox think we are?
Very stupid.

I can't even believe people watch this. Excluding Fantasia, no one who is a peerless, once-in-a-lifetime talent has ever won. It set a dangerous precedent from jump when Tamyra Gray didn't win. Haven't watched it since then (excluding a few episodes the year Fantasia was on).

The American Idol hate ends here. Tamyra Gray was a mediocre talent who wouldn't have made it past Hollywood week in later seasons. Kelly Clarkson sang circles around that entire season one group week after week and deserved to win. I agree, Fantasia is unequaled among the winners, but don't sleep on Carrie Underwood-- I think her commercial success has overshadowed how good she is as a serious artist.
As for Ellen, I actually like the move. The other three judges are basically industry insiders, so it's nice to have the opinion of someone who isn't worried first and foremost about the commercial viability of each contestant, someone who loves music but doesn't make their living off it. It'll be interesting to have an actual fan perspective. But of course, I reserve my right to hate once I actually see her in action.
