Nah, I don't think you are overly pessimistic. I think the Republicans are showing (particularly with their petulant behavior during the health care speech) that they aren't working with Dems on anything if it's not their way. I don't see that changing anytime soon. There are probably plenty of reasonable Rs but they aren't in positions of power and I doubt the national party would back them for seats in 2010 or 2012 unless they are willing to do what the crazies at the top say.

I think stuff will get done, I just think it might be worse. I think the health care bill is going to be a huge disaster. I think it'll do more harm than good. Read that Rolling Stone piece, man. Truly frightening.

Nice. My two favorite parts:

"There is a whole lot of room to move between playing it safe and being crazy single-minded drones like Republicans. No one is saying we should copy their MO, just a little of their conviction."

and

"Ugh…you know, the truth is that though Democrats are supposed to be the liberal party, the party of opposition, they are not. They truly are a hodgepodge of people who don’t like the modern Republican Party. That doesn’t necessarily equal liberal or progressive.

So we have one party and a bunch of people who don’t like that party. That’s it."

I certainly don't follow politics as closely as I probably should, but I had been wondering to myself why Democrats have been unable to pass anything worthwhile when they have the majority in congress and the executive branch. And I think its just like you said. The democratic party is just the default for people who aren't republican. The interesting thing, I think, is what will happen with the Republicans after 2010 when they start to gain some of those seats back, because I also think you're beginning to see an ultra conservative group and a moderately conservative group. My worry is that we'll never have a large enough majority on any issue to accomplish anything, making government useless. I'm overly pessimistic though, so maybe not.
