Paul Anka thinks the new Michael Jackson song released yesterday is a rip-off of one he made years ago. If you listen, it’s obvious the two songs are the same, to the point where Sony would have to be crazy to release Michael’s version without all the legal matters covered.

The Independence Day sequel has a script, but FOX thinks it can get away with not paying Will Smith. Foolish.

This Is It: New unreleased Michael Jackson song and trailer

At midnight last night, MichaelJackson.com released the new MJ single “This Is It,” a mellow love song that features background vocals from his brothers. You can listen to it here:

And of course, later this month on Wednesday, October 28, the new movie also titled “This Is It” will be released into theaters. It’s a documentary containing footage of Michael Jackson’s final days– literally, some of it was shot the week he died– as he rehearsed for what was supposed to be his final concert tour. The new single above will reportedly play over the end credits. Here’s the official trailer from Sony Pictures:

I don’t know what kind of box office they’re expecting, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this turned out to be the highest grossing documentary of all-time, surpassing the Michael Moore films currently at the top. It’ll definitely do numbers overseas. Should be an amazing last look at the last days of a man who, in my opinion, was the greatest musical entertainer in history, doing what he loved.

Video has leaked from Michael Jackson’s tour, This is It, that unfortunately never happened. In the clip Mike is singing one of his classics, Human Nature. Its a little depressing to see, because Mike still obviously had his voice at 50…and the dance movies. He also is vaguely reminiscent of maybe Skeletor in a suit jacket.

It just makes me sad.

Album Review: Chico DeBarge’s Addiction

The DeBarge family has largely been seen as a talented family that never quite reached the commercial and artistic relevance of the Jacksons, with whom they are frequently compared (due, in no small part, to their discovery by Motown impresario Berry Gordy, who told anyone who would listen that they were going to the next Jacksons, but bigger).

This view is not necessarily true or fair.

In many ways, the DeBarges’ ‘80s hits have been more durable than even the great Jacksons trilogy (Destiny, Victory, Triumph). Their hit “All This Love” has been covered numerous times, “I Like It” is one of the most sampled songs of its era, and you can still hear “Rhythm of the Night” on the few remaining black radio stations in the country.

And ironically, Chico DeBarge emerged in the late 1990s as one of the great artists of the contemporary soul movement (along with D’Angelo, Maxwell, and Erykah Badu) at precisely the time that Janet and Michael began their slow fall from popular grace. But Chico—like his family before him—has never been properly respected for his consistently accomplished work, despite his small, rabid fan base.

Personally, I’m very much removed from the 3 hour snooze-fest that is the MTV Video Music Awards. But, they may be able to pull my attention for 5 minutes, because of an apparent Michael Jackson tribute featuring Mike’s famous sister, Janet.
