I say that because I’m going to say that Ginuwine’s debut album, Ginuwine…The Bachelor, helped to revolutionize black popular music when it was released in 1996. And it’s going to sound like hyperbole, because, in pop music terms, 13 years is a long time, and music critics haven’t done an adequate job of situating Ginuwine in his rightful place within black music history.

In 1996, black popular music was in a state of transition. New Jack Swing’s dominance was waning, and the sample-heavy sound of Sean “Puffy” Combs and the bass-heavy, funk-inspired sounds of Atlanta were on the rise, while the music that would be called “neo-soul” was just starting to emerge.

Ginuwine came in and did something different from all three…

So I guess the new trend is taking people who used to be famous, putting them in a house with 20 or so attractive non-famous people, and then letting them pick who they want to slob them down for a week or so. It’s a concept stolen shamelessly from ABC’s The Bachelor, except on these shows non-whites are allowed to participate. After the formula worked for Flava Flav, they figured it could work for anybody. But the genre didn’t really take off until after Danger smashed the homies.

The next celebrity on deck is Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, my childhood crush from the ‘90s R&B supergroup TLC, who was most recently seen selling bottled tap water to African-American women. Her team just posted an ad on Craigslist, looking for dudes from Atlanta who want to humiliate themselves on her new VH1 reality show. I just really, really hope they do background checks this time, ‘cause the last two times I heard of Craigslist and VH1 in relation to helping people find love were here and here. Anyway, here’s the ad:

She is known as a superstar around the world. Her exotic looks have been
featured in People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful.” She is a Pop and R&B
Legend, and one of the best selling artists of all time… and she is looking for
one man to show her some TLC.

Known to millions of fans worldwide as a music icon who put the “sexy”
in CrazySexyCool, she has the fame, the fan-mail, and the friends to last a
lifetime. Her name is CHILLI, and she is ready to meet the man whose heart
of gold can shine with her own.

Doron Ofir Casting, in association with FremantleMedia North America
and VH1, are seeking eligible bachelors of caliber for the possible introduction
to a legendary artist who is ready to groove with the man of her dreams.
Are you worthy of meeting the woman behind the music, behind the
reputation, behind the stardom? Get ready to meet the real deal, because once
you take away all the fame, a remarkable woman awaits you.

Now casting single men who appear to be between the ages of 25 and 40, who
have the sex appeal, personality, good looks, success and heart to date a major
music artist who is looking to find her true love.

To apply:
Email your Name, Telephone Number, and several Recent Pictures to
TheChilliProject@gmail.com
